Last month, Los Angeles sketch journalist Joey Mason sketched the aftermath of devastating wildfires and reported on his experience for On the Spot.
This Sunday, February 23 at 10:30 a.m. PST, join our Live Zoom to listen to On the Spot editor Gabi Campanario converse with Mason about his career, his approach to graphic storytelling and how he markets his work.
On the Spot Artist Talks are free for Print+Digital subscribers ($29.99/year). If you are not a subscriber, you may purchase a $5 ticket to join the Zoom live and/or receive a link to the recording.
Mason, a native of Richmond, Virginia, cut his teeth as an artist working as an art director and designer in the animation industry, but these days he’s more likely to be sketching protesters or community events than drawing storyboards and characters in the studio.

With a joyful style that evokes midcentury cartoons and a knack for cinematic compositions, Mason is keen on sketching the hustle and bustle of city life.

As a travel sketcher, he has captured scenes and city landmarks in New York, Ireland, Serbia, Portugal and Spain.

Mason turns his work into prints and self-published books that he sells on his website and in person at art markets and shows. He also takes commissions creating beskope art drawn live or from photos for private and business clients.
During this Artist Talk, Mason will actually be tuning in live from his artist booth at Smorgarsburg LA, a curated market of small businesses and food vendors. If you are a sketcher interested in monetizing your work or simply looking for inspiration, you won’t want to miss it.
