The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

In his new travel sketchbook Oliver packages two trip through South-East Asia. THE GRAND TOURist takes us on a journey through Bali, Cambodia and Thailand focussing on the ironic aspects of modern traveling into a lighthearted, humorous illustration driven visual essay. More than a pure copy of reality, Oliver’s sketches share a personal point of view. His scenes often emphasizes an humorous aspect.

This piece won the PRIX INTERNATIONAL DE CARNET DE VOYAGE in Clermont Ferrand and is now available for the first time in print!

But there is more than that! In The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Oliver takes us back to Kuta, Bali in the form of a visual reportage. This narrative piece takes a more careful look at the tourism industry. Kuta is not beautiful, it is more interesting than that. Its amalgam of fun seeking tourists, hustlers and Hindu temples provides a rich fabric where tradition and the modern travel industry meet.

We are there when mice play on the kitchen counter, Mom and Pop shops repair motorcycles and Australian tourists party with Fake Gucci bags. But we also get to hear from the other side: the Massage parlors and the taxi drivers that suffered during Covid 19.

So many worlds all interweaved in one location; the travelogue of Kuta serves as a specific example for a universal reality of our times.

This book is for sketchers and travel enthusiasts as well as lovers of drawn reportage alike.
