Berlin – The Wall revisited

Thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, this question remains very much alive. Tourists and locals alike wander perplexed through the city, as the traces of division seem to have been erased. For the most part, anyway. Berlin-based illustrator and urban sketcher Detlef Surrey has embarked on a very personal search for traces with his sketchbook – from Prenzlauer Berg to Treptow. His journey along the former Berlin Wall touches on a wealth of historical sites from many phases of German history. The result is an impressive illustrated book, 100 pages of which depict places and urban life along the current Berlin Wall, filled with personal memories and historical information. The texts are translated into  English  and French  in the back of the book.

About the author

Detlef Surrey is a freelance illustrator and comic artist in Berlin. His clients include agencies, publishers and social organizations such as the German Bundestag and Amnesty International. Surrey he studied visual communication at the HdK Berlin. His comic strip Emil appeared in the Berlin city magazine zitty from 1983 to 1991. In 2007, Surrey designed the popular figure for children, Karlchen Adler, for the German Bundestag. Detlef Surrey is a member of the professional association Illustratoren Organisation eV and has been on its board since 2018. Because he enjoys drawing, he always carries a sketchbook with him and uses it to capture what surrounds him—when traveling as well as in his hometown of Berlin.
